Aspendos Ancient Theatre

The best-preserved Roman theatre in the world

About

Rising to the east of Antalya, near the district of Serik, Aspendos is regarded as the best-preserved Roman theatre to survive from the ancient world. With a seating capacity of around fifteen thousand and a stage building that is almost entirely intact, you feel as though you have stepped two thousand years into the past. The theatre's acoustics are so flawless that a word whispered in the centre of the stage can be heard even from the highest rows. This extraordinary engineering explains why the structure still hosts concerts and festivals. The surrounding aqueducts, agora and basilica ruins show that Aspendos was not merely a theatre but a sophisticated ancient city. The International Opera and Ballet Festival held each summer brings unforgettable nights to this historic stage.

History

Built in the 2nd century AD during the reign of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius by the architect Zenon. Its use as a caravanserai in the Seljuk period helped the structure survive through the centuries.
