About Şanlıurfa

Known as the "City of Prophets," Şanlıurfa reaches into the deepest roots of human history. Nearby Göbeklitepe, with temples dated to twelve thousand years ago, is the oldest known monumental structure — predating Stonehenge by millennia — and has fundamentally changed how we understand history. At the city's heart lies the sacred Balıklıgöl, formed, according to legend, where the prophet Abraham was cast into the fire; its waters, full of sacred carp, make a peaceful resting place in the shade of plane trees. The surrounding mosques, lodges and covered markets weave the city's spiritual fabric. With its famously fiery çiğ köfte, içli köfte and the traditional "sıra geceleri" gatherings, Şanlıurfa keeps alive a deep-rooted Southeastern culture that speaks to both palate and soul.
