About
Displaying Şanlıurfa's rich history, the Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum is of worldwide importance with its unique Roman-era floor mosaics preserved in situ. The museum, built over the ancient villa where they were found, displays the mosaics in their original positions. The collection's most precious works are the mosaics depicting hunting scenes of Amazon queens in vivid colours — with no other example in the world. Mythological figures, animal depictions and finely worked geometric patterns reveal the artistic richness of ancient Edessa (Urfa). Together with the adjacent Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum, this modern museum complex offers an incomparable journey through history, from the finds of Göbeklitepe to Roman mosaics; it is a cultural treasure that everyone visiting the city should see.
History
The mosaics belong to a villa from the Roman period (5th–6th century AD) and were uncovered in excavations in the 2000s. A modern museum was built over them to preserve them in situ; the mosaics depicting Amazon queens are unique in the world.
