About
The oldest settlement core of Ankara, the castle defies the centuries on a hill overlooking the city, together with the historic district within its walls. Its narrow, winding stone streets reveal the ancient spirit behind the capital's modern face. The restored Ottoman houses within the walls live on today as boutique cafés, art galleries, antique shops and spice sellers. Climbing to the highest bastion of the castle, Ankara's wide panorama is laid at your feet; the view is especially enchanting at sunset. The castle area, intertwined with the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations at its foot and traditional bazaars, offers a pleasant route uniting history, shopping and views; it is an ideal stop for touching the capital's past.
History
The castle's foundations reach back to the Galatian and Roman periods; the present walls were largely built in the Byzantine era (7th–9th century) and repaired by the Seljuks and Ottomans. It has been the centre of Ankara's millennia-old history.
