About

Rising on the European shore at the narrowest point of the Dardanelles, Kilitbahir Castle is a strategic Ottoman fortress built to control the strait — as its name ("locking the sea") suggests. Together with Çimenlik Castle on the opposite shore, it holds the strait like a gate. With its unique clover-leaf plan and thick walls, the castle is a striking example of the military architecture of its era. From its ramparts, both shores of the strait and the passing ships are seen from above; this view clearly shows why the castle held strategic importance for centuries. Playing a critical role in the 1915 Battle of Gallipoli as well, the castle has been restored and opened to visitors; uniting history and strait views, this structure is one of the impressive stops on a Çanakkale visit.

History

Built in 1463 by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, together with Çimenlik Castle on the opposite shore, to control the Dardanelles. For centuries it was the key point of the strait's defence and regained importance in 1915.
