Derinkuyu Underground City

A hidden city plunging 80 metres underground

About

Carved into Cappadocia's soft volcanic rock, Derinkuyu is the deepest known underground city, descending about 80 metres and up to eight levels below ground. Able to shelter thousands of people, it is a striking example of engineering and survival genius. Its levels, connected by labyrinthine tunnels, contain churches, stables, wineries, kitchens, schools and even cemeteries. Giant round stone doors could seal the city from within in times of danger. Ventilation shafts hundreds of metres deep supplied fresh air even to the lowest floors. As you move through its narrow, low passages, you vividly sense the life of communities who took refuge underground to escape attacks; it is Cappadocia's most extraordinary historical experience.

History

Its first levels were dug in the Phrygian period (8th–7th century BC) and expanded in the Byzantine era as a refuge against Arab raids. It re-emerged in 1963 when a homeowner discovered a new room behind his wall, and was opened to visitors in 1969.
