Uçhisar Castle

The highest point in Cappadocia

About

Rising at the highest point of Cappadocia, Uçhisar Castle is not actually a castle but a giant fairy chimney hollowed out into hundreds of rooms and tunnels. Shaped by human hands over thousands of years from the soft tuff rock, it is the region's most magnificent natural fortress. From its summit, a 360-degree panorama lays all of Cappadocia at your feet — from Pigeon Valley and Göreme to distant Mount Erciyes. Especially at sunrise, when the balloons rise, the view is breathtaking. The village at the castle's foot offers a peaceful atmosphere with its stone houses and boutique cave hotels; for photography lovers it is the region's most rewarding stop.

History

It was carved out in the Byzantine period to watch over the region and serve as a refuge during attacks. For centuries it was used by villagers as dwellings, storehouses and dovecotes; due to erosion, some sections are closed to visitors today.
