About

Stretching about 14 kilometres and reaching 100 metres deep in places, Ihlara Valley is a lush green canyon that the Melendiz Stream carved into volcanic rock over thousands of years. Amid Cappadocia's dusty landscape, it offers an entirely different world with the coolness of trees and water. The valley's real surprise is the hundreds of Byzantine-era churches carved into the cliffs, their walls adorned with colourful frescoes. As you walk the trail along the stream, you listen to the sound of nature while following the traces of early Christianity. With its shaded walking route, streamside cafés and cool air, Ihlara is Cappadocia's most refreshing nature escape, especially on hot summer days.

History

A major spiritual centre for monks and religious communities in the Byzantine era, the valley contained more than a thousand rock-cut churches and shelters. Its frescoes date to the 9th–11th centuries; the area was used for centuries as a place of seclusion and worship.
