About
At Izmir's western tip, reaching into the deep blue of the Aegean, the Çeşme peninsula is the region's most coveted holiday spot, with its white-sand beaches and thermal springs. Ilıca Beach offers a unique swimming experience, with hot thermal sources rising beneath its shallow, clear water. The coves of Alaçatı, with their perfect wind conditions, host windsurfers from around the world; the fine sands of Altınkum are an ideal resting spot for families. In the evenings, the Çeşme marina and the stone streets of Alaçatı come alive. With the historic Çeşme Castle, mastic trees and regional herb mezes, the area promises far more than just the sea. The Şifne hot springs, famed for their healing waters, are also a short drive away.
History
Taking its name from the word "çeşme" (fountain), the area was an important port and spa centre in the Ottoman era. The bay, which hosted the 1770 Battle of Çeşme, is today one of Türkiye's most exclusive summer destinations.
