About

At the heart of Izmir, stretching from Konak Square to the Agora, Kemeraltı is a vast open bazaar that has been the city's commercial and social lifeline since the seventeenth century. Along its narrow lanes, jewellers, spice sellers, tailors and antique dealers blend into one another. The historic caravanserais, synagogues, mosques and courtyard coffee houses tucked within the bazaar carry Izmir's multicultural past into the present. Sipping a Turkish coffee in the stone courtyard of the Kızlarağası Han is the most delightful way to pause in this labyrinth. From the freshest boyoz and gevrek to almond paste and mastic Turkish delight, all of Izmir's street flavours await you at the corners of this bazaar. Kemeraltı is less about shopping than an experience of discovery and atmosphere.

History

It began to form in the 17th century around an inner harbour that has since become dry land; its name, meaning "under the arch," comes from the arched structures that once surrounded the port. Over the centuries it grew into a cosmopolitan trading hub where Levantine, Greek, Jewish and Turkish merchants met.
