Deyrulzafaran Monastery

A 1,500-year-old Syriac monastery

About

A few kilometres outside Mardin, on a slope overlooking the Mesopotamian plain, the Deyrulzafaran Monastery is one of the world's oldest and most important Syriac Orthodox monasteries. It takes its name, meaning "Saffron Monastery," from the yellowish colour of the stones used in its construction. With a history of about fifteen hundred years, the monastery served for centuries as the patriarchal seat of the Syriac Orthodox Church. Its churches adorned with stonework, the underground chamber thought to belong to a sun temple, and the religious artefacts in its courtyard offer a deep spiritual history. Still an active place of worship, the monastery can be visited on guided tours; to get to know Syriac culture, language and faith closely and to take in the peaceful view over the plain, it is one of the most meaningful stops on a Mardin visit.

History

The monastery's foundations date to the 5th century; it was built over a Roman sun temple and later a fortress. Between 1293 and 1932 it served as the patriarchal seat of the Syriac Orthodox Church and remains an active religious centre.
