About

Rising in the very centre of Mardin's historic fabric, the Grand Mosque is the city's oldest and most important place of worship. Its single, tall minaret adorned with stonework forms a landmark commanding Mardin's honey-coloured silhouette. Dating from the Artuqid period, the mosque reflects the building art of its era with its plain but magnificent architecture, carved stone details and courtyard. Its minaret rising among the narrow streets is like a compass that helps you find your way in the old city; at prayer time, the call rising from the minaret spreads across the whole plain. Intertwined with the surrounding historic bazaar, caravanserais and stone houses, the mosque is a living example of Mardin's centuries-spanning Islamic heritage; it is one of the central, symbolic stops on an old-city visit.

History

Built in the 12th century during the Artuqid period, it is one of the region's oldest mosques. Having undergone various repairs over the centuries, the structure has survived to the present as an important example of Artuqid architecture with its carved stone minaret and courtyard.
