Dülük Ancient City & Forest
Ancient temples and pine forest
About
Located north of Gaziantep, Dülük is both a millennia-old ancient settlement and a large pine-forest recreation area where city dwellers breathe. With history and nature intertwined, this region is a popular escape thanks to its closeness to the city centre. The rock-cut tombs and cave temples of the ancient city of Doliche, and especially the underground temple of the Mithras cult widespread in the Roman era (the Mithras Cave), reveal the area's deep history. Coming across ancient ruins while walking in the forest is an extraordinary experience. With its picnic areas, shaded walking paths and cool air, Dülük Forest is a peaceful corner where Antep families meet nature at weekends and breathe amid history.
History
Known as the ancient city of Doliche, Dülük is one of the region's oldest settlements and gained fame as the birthplace of the cult of Jupiter Dolichenus. It was an important religious centre in the Roman era; the surrounding rock temples date to this period.
