Zeugma Mosaic Museum
The world's largest mosaic museum
About
Gaziantep's pride, the Zeugma Mosaic Museum, as the world's largest mosaic museum, displays together the most magnificent floor mosaics of ancient Rome. The colourful mosaics covering its vast halls from end to end reveal the artistic vision of two thousand years ago. The museum's most famous work is the "Gypsy Girl" mosaic, which enchants visitors with her sorrowful, mysterious gaze; this small face has become almost the museum's emblem. The other mosaics, adorned with mythological scenes and depictions of gods and goddesses, reflect the same mastery. With its modern, impressive display technique, Zeugma keeps the richness of the ancient world alive in a contemporary space; it is a cultural treasure that everyone visiting Gaziantep must see.
History
The mosaics come from the ancient city of Zeugma on the banks of the Euphrates; founded around 300 BC, the city hosted a Roman legion. Recovered through rescue excavations carried out due to the threat of submersion under the Birecik Dam, the mosaics have been displayed in this museum, opened in 2011.
