Cumalıkızık Village

A 700-year-old living Ottoman village

About

On the slopes of Uludağ, standing for seven hundred years, Cumalıkızık is the best-preserved example of early-Ottoman civil architecture and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. With its brightly painted houses and narrow cobbled streets, it seems to have stopped time. The historic houses of wood and adobe, with their projecting upper floors, lean against one another along the narrow, winding streets. Peppers drying in courtyards, ivy on stone walls and the plane tree in the village square offer the atmosphere of an authentic Anatolian village. With its garden houses serving a delicious village breakfast, gözleme stalls and villagers selling homemade jam, Cumalıkızık is one of Bursa's most delightful escapes — for both history and flavour.

History

One of the first Ottoman villages founded around the conquest of Bursa in 1326. Having largely preserved its original fabric for seven hundred years, the village was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014 as part of 'Bursa and Cumalıkızık'.
