About
The liveliest symbol of Bursa's position on the Silk Road, Koza Han has remained the centre of the silk and silkworm-cocoon trade for five centuries. Its two-storey arcaded courtyard is one of the city's most peaceful and poetic spaces. The small prayer room and ablution fountain in the middle of the courtyard, combined with the tea garden set in the shade of plane trees, create a nostalgic atmosphere. In the han's rooms, silk scarves, textiles and traditional souvenirs are still sold today; the cocoon-market tradition held each spring continues. Neighbouring the Grand Mosque and the covered bazaar, Koza Han is an essential stop on a Bursa visit, uniting historic shopping with rest.
History
Built in 1491 by Sultan Bayezid II to provide income for a complex in Istanbul. For centuries it was the centre of the silk and cocoon trade, from which it takes its name.
