Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
About
Taking its name from Bodrum's ancient name Halicarnassus, the Mausoleum is the monumental tomb built for the Carian king Mausolus, whose magnificence enchanted the entire ancient world. Even the word "mausoleum" derives from this structure; it was so grand that it was counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Only the foundations and some architectural fragments survive today, the structure having been largely destroyed by earthquakes and the later reuse of its stones. Yet the explanatory models and sculpture remains on the site help you picture the splendour of this masterpiece, which once exceeded 45 metres in height. With its quiet, shaded garden, the site is a serene corner away from Bodrum's crowds where you can feel the depth of history.
History
Built in the 4th century BC (around 350 BC) for the Carian satrap Mausolus by his wife Artemisia, with the most famous Greek sculptors of the age working on it. In the 15th century, the Knights of St John used its remaining stones to build Bodrum Castle.
