About
Rising on the wooded Alâeddin Hill in the centre of Konya, the Alâeddin Mosque is the capital mosque of the Anatolian Seljuk State and the city's oldest large structure. Behind its plain exterior lies a rich history and architectural splendour. The mosque's forest-like columned interior stands out with marble columns repurposed from ancient structures and an ebony hand-carved pulpit. In the tombs in its courtyard, many Seljuk sultans lie in their eternal rest; in this respect the mosque is, in effect, a dynasty's mausoleum. The green hill in the very centre of the city is a peaceful park where Konya locals rest and drink tea in the shade; uniting history, spirituality and city life, Alâeddin Hill is a central stop on a Konya visit.
History
Built and expanded between the 12th and 13th centuries under several Seljuk sultans; it took its present form during the reign of Sultan Alâeddin Keykubad (1220–1221) and takes its name from him. Eight Seljuk sultans are buried in the tombs in its courtyard.
