Mevlana Museum

A spiritual centre under a green dome

About

Konya's emblem and heart, the Mevlana Museum is a spiritual centre containing the tomb of the great thinker and poet Mevlana Jalal ad-Din Rumi, drawing visitors from around the world. Its green dome covered in turquoise tiles is the city's most recognised silhouette. Once a Mevlevi lodge, the building today displays the sarcophagi of Mevlana and his family, priceless manuscript copies of the Mesnevî, dervish costumes and scenes from the dervishes' lives. On entering, the deep peace and spirituality enveloping visitors is felt at once. Mevlana's call, "Come, whoever you are, come again," transcending centuries with its teaching of tolerance and love, brings together people of every culture in this place; it is a world-famous spiritual stop where everyone visiting Konya will find peace.

History

After Mevlana's death in 1273, a tomb was built over his grave and in time became a Mevlevi lodge. It was opened as a museum in 1926; its green-tiled dome (the Kubbe-i Hadra) is the structure's emblem.
