About
Rising in a lush garden overlooking the Black Sea to the west of Trabzon, Hagia Sophia is a 13th-century Byzantine church. As the most magnificent work of the Empire of Trebizond, it carries the artistic and architectural refinement of its era into the present. The structure's most precious treasure is the frescoes covering its inner walls and dome, admired for their vivid colours; depicting scenes from the Bible, these wall paintings are counted among the finest examples of Eastern Christian art. Its stone-worked façade and elegant bell tower also draw attention. With its sea-view garden and peaceful atmosphere, Hagia Sophia is a serene and impressive stop in Trabzon, offering history and art together.
History
Built as a church in the mid-13th century (around 1250) during the Empire of Trebizond. After the Ottoman conquest in 1461 it was converted into a mosque, became a museum in the Republican era, and reopened for worship in 2013.
