Opened in 1862, Mahfel is the oldest known reading house and coffee house in Bursa; for a century and a half it has been a meeting point for poets, intellectuals and ordinary Bursa locals. The terrace beside the Gökdere stream is one of the city's most peaceful corners. Serving a rich Bursa breakfast in the mornings, the place is famed all day for Turkish coffee and especially the warm Kemalpaşa dessert soaked in cheese syrup. A coffee sipped to the sound of water bridges past and present. With its historic fabric, shady trees and nostalgic atmosphere, Mahfel is a pause where time slows down amid the fast pace of city life.
