About
Eskişehir's oldest settlement, Odunpazarı, is the historic heart of the city with its brightly painted Ottoman-era wooden mansions. The bay-windowed houses lining its sloping, narrow streets form, in effect, an open-air museum. Carefully restored, these mansions live on today as boutique hotels, cafés, art galleries and craft workshops. By visiting the workshops of meerschaum carving — the region's traditional craft — you can see how this white stone is shaped. With its cobbled streets, pastel-coloured houses and artistic atmosphere, Odunpazarı is Eskişehir's most attractive stop for photography lovers and those seeking a peaceful stroll.
History
It is the oldest district forming the foundations of Eskişehir; it takes its name from the market where firewood was once traded. The wooden houses date to the 18th–19th centuries and have been largely restored and preserved.
