Lycian Rock Tombs (Amyntas)

Temple-fronted tombs carved into the cliffs

About

Carved into the steep cliffs overlooking Fethiye's centre, the Lycian rock tombs are the most magnificent heritage to survive from the ancient city of Telmessos. The most famous, the Tomb of Amyntas, enchants with its grand appearance resembling the façade of a temple. Dated to the 4th century BC, these tombs are striking examples of the Lycian civilisation's tradition of burying their dead high in the cliffs, close to the sky; with their columned, pedimented façades, they are, in effect, temples carved from rock. The steps leading up to the tombs give visitors the chance to examine them closely. Especially at sunset, the rock tombs turning golden in the light of the setting sun form one of Fethiye's most striking views; right in the heart of the city, it is an incomparable stop where history and nature meet.

History

The Lycian rock tombs were carved in the 4th century BC by the Lycians who lived in the ancient city of Telmessos (modern Fethiye). The most magnificent, the Tomb of Amyntas, takes its name from the Greek inscription on it; with its temple-fronted design it is a masterpiece of Lycian tomb architecture.
