Saklıkent Gorge
Türkiye's deepest, ice-cold gorge
About
About an hour southeast of Fethiye, Saklıkent, at 18 kilometres long with walls reaching 300 metres in places, is one of Türkiye's longest and deepest gorges. Like its name, meaning "hidden city," it is a natural wonder concealed among the mountains. Walking against the current — at times waist-deep — in the ice-cold mountain water running through the gorge is an extremely refreshing and thrilling adventure on hot summer days. In the narrow passages, the light filtering between the high rock walls creates an enchanting atmosphere. The wooden platforms at the entrance, gazebos built over the stream and trout restaurants are ideal for resting before and after the gorge walk; uniting nature, adventure and coolness, Saklıkent is one of Fethiye's most beloved nature escapes.
History
Saklıkent Gorge formed as mountain waters flowing for thousands of years eroded the limestone rocks. Declared a national park in 1996, it was placed under protection and opened to nature tourism; it is open to visitors except in periods when the water rises very high due to melting snow in spring.
